Save It for Later

Description:
Cord blood banking is a procedure that takes blood from the umbilical cord at birth and stores it for a fee in a private blood bank. People do this because cord blood is rich in stem cells, which have the ability to transform into any human cell and can help cure diseases  including cancer, blood disorders, immune system disorders, and genetic diseases. There are a lot of people that accept this type of genetic engineering because there isn’t very many risks. The only major risk of this is that the blood that is saved will contain the same disease and not help at all. It can cost up to $2,500 annually. If you are able to afford it, it is definitely worth doing.

Pros:
Cord blood is rich in stem cells. Stem cells can basically be transformed into any human body cell. Using cord blood to get stem cells is a much easier procedure than getting stem cell donations from bone marrow. This way of getting stem cells also has a higher chance of your body not rejecting them. Stem cells can help treat more than 80 life threatening diseases and disorders.

Cons:
Privately stored cord blood does have some big limitations as a kind of health insurance policy. Even if your child does get sick, it may not be the right treatment. If a child develops certain genetic diseases, his or her own frozen cord blood isn’t going to help. Introducing a new set of immune cells from a donor  can sometimes be more effective in fighting certain cancers than getting more of the patients own cells.

Reflection:
My concept is moral. Many people are benefiting on this concept.  I think that cord blood banking is a good idea. I know that the benefits outweigh the negatives. I believe that the concept of the cord blood banking is a good thing.. If you can afford cord blood banking, I would totally say yes. Most people don’t end up using the cord blood that they have stored, but a family member with the same blood type could, or you could donate it. I think that it’s very important to store this blood because if you’re not going to use it, then someone else could.

We asked a few people about cord blood banking. Here are the questions we asked and their answers.

  1. Ms. Rosen - Do you think that Cord Blood banking is a good idea for parents? Why or why not?

  • “ I think it depends on your financial situation. If you can afford it yes. If you can’t no. It’s not guaranteed to cure that certain disease.”

  1. Mrs. Stiles - What made you decide to do cord blood banking on your daughter?

  • “Because it they said that cord blood could be used in the future for certain diseases.they also said it was the purest form of blood. And that you could even use it for leukemia patients. I thought it was important to save it for you or anyone else in the family that has the same blood type.”

     3. Semir Gulati - If you have a child, would you like to have their cord blood banked? why        or why not?

  • “Yes, if I could afford it. I would want a safety net for my child.”

4. Sophia Spendlove - Do you wish your cord blood was banked?

  •    She would because she wants the chance of being saved later on if she needs it.

5. Vanessa Barragan - Do you think that cord Blood Banking is beneficial or unnecessary.

  • “I believe that cord Blood Banking is beneficial because it is a safety net. If something were to occur, the blood can be used. Even though the costs are high at the moment, they will decrease. I would definitely save it if I could afford it.”

6. Emily Carter - If you EVER have children, will you consider cord blood banking?

  • “Yes because later in life my children can be saved and cured with whatever illness they have.”
