Genotyping a baby is when scientist take all of the babies genes when it is born and can see if they have a certain type of disease. Then the scientist can treat the baby right away or they can even try to change that gene if it is only a mutation in one cell. The scientist will also now if the baby has longer to live or if the only have a short time to live and they can treat it right away. This will also give the parents a heads up on what is to come and what is to happen to that baby based on the genotype.
The public right now has mixed feelings on this topic because of what is to happen to that baby if it is genotyped or if it is morally right other than just letting nature take its toll on people. This can help people because it can tell if the child needs therapy to prevent the disease early on. Then the parents and all the people that know the child will always be waiting for the day that the child gets sick and they won’t get anything done together.
For the cost of this, I would think that the cost would be a lot because we don’t the type of equipment yet to see the genes and actually be able to read and change them. We would need to buy all of the equipment and we pay to have it built. Then to make it run that may cost a lot too because of the electricity and all of the other materials it used. So at first, like everything, will cost a lot, then the cost will slowly go down.
These are five people that we interviewed and what they had to say about genotyping.
