Cloning by Elijah Martinez and Frank Morales
Cloning is the process of producing a imitation or copy of something. The most common cloning method is somatic cell nuclear transfer or simply nuclear transfer and it requires two kinds of cell. You need a somatic cell and an egg cell. A somatic cell is any cell other than a sperm or egg cell so you could say opposites attract. Cloning starts with an isolated donor nucleus. This step is repeated many times to gather many cell nuclei. A small needle and syringe is used to poke through the cell membrane to capture the nucleus and remove it from the cell. Next get an unfertilized egg and remove the eggs nucleus. Next you insert the donor nucleus with its complete genetic material. Lastly you insert into a female womb and let it develop until later it is born genetically identical.
We interviewed a couple of our fellow students and asked them about cloning. We asked our friends Michael and Seth the same question which is “If you could clone yourself, would you and why?” Michael said yes because then it could go to school for him while he did whatever he wanted too and Seth said yes because then he could things done faster and have more free time. We asked Jacob that if he lost a child would he bring it back as a clone and he said probably because its almost exactly the same but the not the original one. We asked Aaron what he thinks cloning was and he said that it is where a person gets an exact replica of themselves like a twin. The last person we asked what do you think the world will say of you if you cloned yourself? He answered "I think the world would think that I'm a creep or that it's my twin"
Here are some of the some of the benefits and risks. Some of the pros to cloning are that parents who have lost a child or can't make one can get one with a clone. People can get organ transplants from a clone of themselves or from someone easily. Endangered animals can be cloned to save the species. It could also be used for gene therapy. Some of the risks and cons of cloning are there would be a lack of diversity in humankind. There is a possibility that the age of the donor could be imprinted on the growing embryo. This would cause premature aging issues and potentially lead to premature death. There could also be problems with the cloning and the clone could be messed up.
